FeJAL Signs €60,000 EU Sub-Grant to Advance Peacebuilding and Transitional Justice in Liberia

The Female Journalists Association of Liberia officially on Monday, May 25, 2026 signed a €60,000 sub-grant agreement under the European Union-funded PEACEGEN Liberia Project to strengthen peacebuilding, transitional justice, and community reconciliation efforts across five counties in Liberia.

The three-year initiative, funded by the European Union and implemented by Kvinna till Kvinna Foundation (KTK) in partnership with the Women NGOs Secretariat of Liberia (WONGOSOL) and several youth and women-led organizations, seeks to strengthen the meaningful participation and leadership of women and youth in Liberia’s ongoing peacebuilding, conflict prevention, decision-making, and transitional justice processes at both local and national levels.

The project is being implemented in Bomi County, Bong County, Montserrado County, Nimba County, and Sinoe County, with national-level advocacy and coordination based in Monrovia.

Other implementing partners include the Alliance for Peace, Justice and Human Rights, Association of Female Lawyers of Liberia (AFELL), and the National Young Women Political Council of Liberia.

The signing ceremony took place at the historic WIPNET Peace Hut a site deeply connected to Liberia’s women-led peace movement during the civil crisis. The Peace Hut continues to stand as a symbol of courage, resilience, healing, and collective action led by Liberian women in pursuit of peace and justice.

The initiative comes at a critical moment as Liberia continues making progress toward transitional justice and accountability, including national conversations surrounding the establishment of the War and Economic Crimes Court in Liberia.

Under the PEACEGEN Liberia Project, FeJAL will lead media capacity development efforts and support community peace champions in telling stories of reconciliation, justice, and hope.

As part of its implementation responsibilities, FeJAL will:

  • Facilitate creative peacebuilding workshops
  • Document intergenerational peace initiatives through photography and storytelling
  • Map independent media institutions
  • Train radio stations on youth-responsive, gender-sensitive, and conflict-sensitive reporting
  • Promote inclusive dialogue and community engagement around peace and justice issues

The organization believes the partnership with KTK and the European Union demonstrates renewed confidence in women-led organizations and community media institutions working to preserve Liberia’s hard-earned peace.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, FeJAL President Lisa Diasay praised Kvinna till Kvinna and other partners for their support from the project’s conceptual stage through proposal development and eventual grant signing.

Madam Diasay reaffirmed FeJAL’s commitment to fostering peace through journalism, storytelling, and media capacity development. “FeJAL remains committed to using journalism, storytelling and community engagement as tools for justice, accountability, healing and lasting peace,” she emphasized.

The official launch of the PEACEGEN Liberia Project is expected during the week of June 22, 2026.
